If youāve ever Googled natural cleaning tips, chances are youāve seen someone singing the praises of apple cider vinegar (ACV). And yes, it can work... but should it be your go-to? Not necessarily. š

Letās get into what ACV is actually good for around the house, what it isnāt, and how to make it work if you happen to have a bottle in the pantry thatās been hanging out a little too long. š
š§¼ Can You Use Apple Cider Vinegar to Clean?
Yesāyou absolutely can!Ā But Iāll be honest... I donāt usually reach for it. ACV is slightly less acidic than distilled white vinegar, which means itās a bitĀ less effective when it comes to cutting through grime or deodorizing strong smells.
Also? It smells like salad dressing.Ā š Not terrible, just not how I want my whole house to smell.

If youāre going the DIY or natural route, I always recommend distilled white vinegarĀ instead. Itās:
š° Cheaper
šŖ More effective
š Less smelly
That said, if youāre trying to use up a bottle of ACV or you like the natural routeāit still has its place! Just use it wisely. š
š§Ŗ Is Apple Cider Vinegar an Effective Cleaning Agent?
Kind of! ACV is great for:
Light deodorizing
Cutting through minor grime
Freshening up small spaces
But itās NOT a disinfectant. āSo if you're dealing with raw chicken juice on your counter, skip the ACV (or any vinegar, really) and go for a proper disinfecting cleanerĀ insteadālike Lysol, Branch Basics Oxygen Boost, or something that specifically lists bacteria-killing power. š¦
š§“ How to Use ACV for Cleaning (the Right Way)
ACV is stronger than you think, so you always want to dilute it. Straight-up ACV can be too harsh for some surfaces andĀ that smell will linger longer than you think.

Mix this simple solution:
š§“ 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar
š§ 1 part Water
š§¼ Store in a spray bottleĀ (linked!)
šæ Optional: Add a few drops of essential oilĀ (like lemon š or lavender š) if youāre sensitive to strong smells
Then, apply with a:
Microfiber clothĀ š§½ (non-abrasive!)
Soft sponge
Or just dip and wipe as needed
š Where to Use ACV in Your Home
Hereās where ACV shines š
⨠Glass & Mirrors
Use your ACV solution to get a streak-free shineājust like with white vinegar. Spray and wipe with a lint-free clothĀ or even a coffee filterĀ for crystal-clear results.

⨠Microwave
Add a splash of ACV to a microwave-safe bowlĀ of water and heat for 2ā3 minutes. The steam will loosen all the gunkāthen just wipe it clean! š

⨠Garbage Disposal
Pour a mix of baking soda + ACVĀ down the drain. Let it bubble for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water to neutralize odors and cut grease. šØ

⨠Laundry
Add 1/2 cupĀ to your rinse cycleĀ to help soften fabrics and get rid of musty towel smells. Great for gym clothes, too! š§ŗ

⨠Toilet Bowl
Pour 1 cupĀ of ACV into the bowl and let it sit overnight. Scrub in the morning for a fresher, cleaner toiletāno bleach required! š½āØ

⨠Pet Accidents on Rugs
ACV can help neutralize odorsĀ from pet messesājust always test a small spot first. Pair it with baking sodaĀ for extra odor-busting power. š¾

š¦ Can You Use ACV to Clean Mold?
Technically, yes⦠but I wouldnāt recommend it for the heavy stuff.ACV has mild antifungal properties, so it might help with light surface moldĀ (like in a window track), but itās NOT strong enough for mold on:
š§± Porous surfaces (like drywall)
šæ Showers with deep mildew
š§½ Grout thatās already darkened
For mold cleanup, I personally use distilled white vinegarāor a commercial mold removerĀ when things get intense. šŖ
š« What NOT to Clean with ACV
Just like white vinegar, there are things you absolutely shouldnāt cleanĀ with ACV:
ā Natural StoneĀ (granite, marble, travertine): ACV can etch and dull the finish, and strip away protective sealants.
ā Wood surfacesĀ (especially unsealed): It can dry it out or cause damageĀ over time.
ā Electronics/screens: Never use ACV on LED, phone, or TV screensāthe acid can cause permanent damage. Stick to screen-safe wipesĀ or distilled water + microfiberĀ only!
ā Anything labeled āno acidic cleanersā: Always check the tag or packaging first!
š¬ Final Thoughts
I love a good DIY cleaning moment, but just because somethingās ānaturalā doesnāt mean itās safe for every surface. šæ

Apple cider vinegarĀ has its place in home cleaningāitās great in a pinch, or for deodorizing or small tasks. But if you want a powerhouse natural cleaner, distilled white vinegar is still the MVPĀ in my book. š
āļø Always test on a small spot first
āļø Never mix vinegar with bleachĀ (or ANYTHING bleach-based!) ā ļø
āļø And when in doubt, go simple!
