How To Preserve Wooden Cutting Boards🪵

Wooden chopping boards are a kitchen staple!!👩‍🍳 They are beautiful and durable making them the perfect accessory!🥰 However, they do require some special care to stay in top condition!!👇

So today we're talking about how you can take care of it properly so you can ensure it lasts longer, stays sanitary and looks beautiful for years to come✨

1. Clean It Often & Properly🧽

One of the most important steps in preserving your wooden chopping board is cleaning it properly after each use! Unlike plastic or glass boards, wood requires a gentle cleaning process to avoid warping or cracking.🪵

After chopping your fruits, vegetables, and cooked foods, you can just wipe down your board with a damp cloth or sponge and rinse it off!💧Always avoid soaking the board in water, as this can cause the wood to absorb moisture and eventually warp or crack!!😬

For meat or fish, you will need a more thorough cleaning‼️ To kill bacteria, you can use a mixture of vinegar or lemon juice and water!🍋 Mix the solution in a spray bottle, spray it on, and then let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse with warm water.🚿

2. Always Dry Thoroughly💨

One of the quickest ways to damage a wooden chopping board is by letting it stay wet for too long.😬 After washing, use a clean towel to wipe the board dry 🧻. You don’t want moisture to sit on the surface, as it can lead to mold or warping🦠

Additionally, always store your board standing up, or in an upright position to ensure air circulation, allowing it to dry completely!💨 Avoid laying it flat on the counter, as moisture can become trapped underneath👇

3. Oil It Regularly🛢️

Oiling is one of the most crucial steps to keep your board hydrated, prevent cracking, and maintain its natural shine 🌟.

Always use a food-safe mineral oil because they are odorless, tasteless, and won’t go rancid!🥴 Avoid vegetable oils or olive oils 🫒, as they can develop unpleasant odors over time!

To apply, simply pour a small amount of oil directly onto the surface of the board and rub it in with a soft cloth or paper towel🧻. Let the board absorb the oil overnight, and wipe off any excess the next day!🌅 It is super simple, easy and will have your board looking gorgeous!

I recommend oiling your wooden chopping board once a month or whenever it starts to look dry!🗓️

4. Avoid Extreme Temperatures 🌡️

Wood is sensitive to temperature changes, and exposing your wooden chopping board to extreme heat can cause it to crack or warp🔥. Avoid placing your board in direct sunlight, near a stove, or in the oven as these can dry out the wood too quickly.☀️

Additionally, you never want to put your cutting board in the dishwasher!!💧 The intense heat and prolonged exposure to water in a dishwasher will cause serious damage to your wooden chopping board.❌

5. Remove Stains and Odors Naturally 🌿

Over time, your board may pick up stains and odors from certain foods with strong odors like garlic, onions, or beets.🧄 There are two methods that can naturally remove them without damaging the wood!👇

  1. Use Baking Soda or Salt: Sprinkle baking soda or coarse salt on the stained or smelly areas. Then, scrub with a damp cloth or a half-cut lemon 🍋. Rinse with water and dry as usual💧

  1. Vinegar Solution: For stronger odors, you can use a vinegar and water solution to neutralize the smell 👃. Spray it on, wait for a few minutes, and wipe clean!🧻

6. Rotate Usage ♻️

To prevent excessive wear in one spot, rotate which side of the board you use.🔁 Did you know that some wooden chopping boards are designed with a smooth side for chopping and a grooved side to catch juices🥩?? Rotating the board to utilize these features will prolong the life of it!!🤩

Now go oil those cutting boards!!😉 We hope this blog was helpful and informative! Let us know in the comments if you have any other tips and tricks you use to preserve your cutting boards!👇
