Beauty Bliss: Keeping Your Cosmetics Clean and Tidy💄

Did you know makeup products actually expire?? Yeah... I definitely need to clean out my makeup drawer and throw away some of those products I've been using since middle school😅 That's why this week we're talking all about cleaning your makeup applicators makeup expiration dates and of course... makeup organizers because I know your makeup drawer could use a makeover!😉

Basic Cosmetic Cleaning Rules✨

Wash Hands🤲: Ensure you are always washing your hands before applying any skincare or make up products!! The bacteria in your hands can easily transfer over and will shorten the life span of your makeup products!👎

Keep Track of Expiration Dates📅: Makeup products can actually expire! So if you are still using some of your products from middle school (don't worry I've been guilty of this before too)... you might want to rethink what you are putting on your face!🥴 Check your products for expiration dates but a few basic rules of thumb are as follow:

  • Mascara/Liquid Eyeliner: 3-6 Months👀

  • Liquid Foundation/Concealer: 6-12 Months😌

  • Powder Products/Blush/Eyeshadow: 1-2 Years😊

  • Lipstick/Gloss: 1-2 Years💄

Store In Dry, Cool Place🌡️: It is always recommended to keep your cosmetics in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight. And don't forget to store them with the caps securely closed to prevent contamination!!😷

Clean Brushes/Sponges Frequently🫧: It may seem like a hassle to do this weekly, or even monthly, but it can extend the life of your brushes for years!! Sponges are recommended to be cleaned after every use and replace them weekly if you use them every day. Brushes can get by a little longer and cleaned thoroughly every month or so! But it is technically ideal to clean them weekly if you use them every day☺️ Keep in mind, this can also keep your face from breaking out as much if your products are clean!!!😉

Avoid Moisture💧: It may be tempting but never add water or saliva to makeup to revive dried-out products like mascara or eyeliner!! This can introduce bacteria and compromise product life span!🦠

How to Clean Brushes/Sponges🧼

  1. Prepare Your Tools: Start by gathering any of your dirty makeup brushes, a brush cleanser (or Dawn Dish soap actually works as well!), and a shallow bowl.🥣

  2. Rinse the Bristles: Run the bristles of the brush under lukewarm water! Make sure the water isn't too cold or too hot or it can damage the bristles or dissolve the glue that holds them together!💧

  3. Add Cleanser/Soap: Add a small amount of the brush cleaner (or dish soap) straight into the bowl and mix it around!🍥

  4. Swirl and Lather: Gently swirl around the bristles in the bowl of water, using your hands to work up a lather and make sure all the bristles are coated!🫧

  5. Rinse: Once fully lathered, rinse out all the soap in the bristles under lukewarm water again! Make sure it is thoroughly rinsed and no soap remains before moving on!🚰

  6. Squeeze Out Excess Water: Gently squeeze the bristles from the ferrule (the metal part that holds the bristles) toward the tips to remove all the excess water.💧

  7. Lay Flat/Upside Down to Dry: Lay the cleaned brushes on a towel to dry but ensure the bristles are hanging slightly off towel and counter to allow air circulation for them to fully dry!!🧻 OR for best results, you can hang them upside down! Check out this video to see how I've done always it!😉 HOWEVER, do not stand the brushes upright to dry as the water can seep into the base of the brush and weaken the glue that holds it together!

  8. Drying Time: Allow the brushes to air dry completely, which may take several hours to a day, depending on the brush size and bristle density! Do not use a hairdryer to speed up the process because the heat can actually damage the bristles!❌

Sponges: The process for cleaning makeup sponges is the same! Rinse under lukewarm water, lather with soap/makeup cleanser, rinse out soap, squeeze excess water, and air dry!!😉
