Easy Ways To Banish Pet Odor From Your Home🐾

I know we all adore our sweet fur babies. But I also know that said "fur baby" looooves to run in the sprinklers, and then track their wet paws and stinky odor around your home😅.

Keeping your home beautiful and odor-free with pets can be a huge struggle. 😵‍💫

I, for one, know I have had moments when guests are coming over, and I am frantically lighting candles and opening windows to clear out the "pet smell" that may be lingering. And I know I can't be the only one...🫢

We love our sweet animals, but we also love a clean, fresh smelling home. Here's how to get the best of both worlds😉⬇️

Regular Grooming

First and foremost (& probably the most obvious...), ensure you are regularly grooming, bathing, brushing & maintaining dental care!🧼

The amount of bathing, brushing and regular grooming completely depends on the breed. So, it is always best to look up your specific breed and find the correct information for you and your pet! Regular grooming could range anywhere from once a a week to once every six months.🗓️

‼️Reminder: Over bathing can cause damage to a dogs coat‼️

Starting at the "source" of the issue, and using these preventative practices will make a HUGE difference on that pet smell in your home.🤩

Wash Bedding

Many of those odors that smell like "dog" come from their bedding and blankets!🧺

Ensure you are washing your pets bedding regularly! Again, this up to the owner. Some may notice odors coming from their cute, little companion's spot after a few days, and others may be able to stretch out the washing days to a couple weeks!🫧

For a little extra kick, you can also use a couple cheap ingredients around your home to help neutralize the odors:

  • Vinegar: If the detergent just isn't cutting it and their bedding still comes out stinky, try tossing in an additional half cup of white vinegar to the load, to help neutralize the odors!! This will also help soften the bedding so your pet can be extra comfy🥰

  • Baking Soda: If you don't want to do a full wash day, try sprinkling a little baking soda on your pet's bedding (make sure they aren't around while you're doing this!!!😅). Let it sit for at least 30 minutes and then vacuum it up for a quick fix to a smelly bed!🛏️

Air Purifiers

Don't underestimate the power of a good air purifier!💨

I use the Kaltech WallAir Purifier. The design is sleek and doesn't take up extra space in your home because its sleek design attaches right to the wall!🤩 It purifies the air by removing odors, pollen, dust, and other harmful substances! Your home will not only smell better, but it will have safer, and fresher air!🥳

Spend less time cleaning, and even less time worrying about the smell of your home with this all in one air purifier!🥰 For more details and to see it in action, check out our video here!⬇️

Maintain Floor/Carpet

Maintaining your floors (AKA: where all your pet's fur settles) is crucial to keeping the pet odor from taking over your home. Especially, if you have large carpeted/rugged areas!‼️

Hard Floor: If you have a long haired pet that happens to shed a lot, you probably already know the need to vacuum frequently. Vacuuming will not only help the visual appeal of your home, but help eliminate the odor!😊

✨If you are getting frustrated with your current vacuum and it's lack of ability to pick up hair smoothly... Consider checking out our Vacuum Buying Guide to see the many vacuums we recommend and all the pro's and con's of each!✨

Carpet: For carpeted areas, you may notice your vacuum sometimes just doesn't have the suction power to get out ALL the hair and debris. We found the perfect, budget-friendly tool to help with this dilemma: A Carpet Rake!🤩 This little rake gets all of the dust, debris, and hair out of your carpets and rug. One sweep along the spot where you fur baby likes to lay, and you will be SHOCKED at how much the vacuum missed! Check it out in action⬇️

Pet Accidents

It is not uncommon to have to deal with the occasional "accident". Especially if you have ever brought home a puppy...😅 Knowing how to properly clean these mishaps are crucial!

It's first important to note that dogs who have not been properly "potty trained", will mark on the same spot over, and over, and over again, if they can smell it!🐶 This is why it is crucial to neutralize the smell, to prevent it from being a reoccurring problem and to keep your house from smelling "funky". 😬

So, how do you neutralize the odor?🤔

  1. Enzymatic Cleaner: Enzymatic cleaners are ideal for pet accidents because they completely erase the odors out of carpets or linens. I recommend Rocco & Roxie Supply Co. Stain & Odor Eliminator, because it can also be used for the litter box, hard wood floors, tile, upholstery, laundry, etc.! 🧺

  2. DIY Solution: Another option is a DIY solution that specifically targets neutralizing the odor: baking soda, vinegar and water.😉 Mix a cup of vinegar and a cup of water together. Then, add in about 2 teaspoons of baking soda and mix it all together in a spray bottle. Once the stain has been blotted up, spray this mixture of it to remove any lasting stains and neutralize the odor!!🤯

Proper Ventilation

Insufficient ventilation within your home can cause the accumulation of odors to negatively impact indoor air quality. Stagnant air allows unpleasant smells to linger and build up over time.😷

This is why it's so important to remember to crack a window or a door every once in awhile when you are able to. Allow the air to circulate better: the fresh air to coming in, while pushing the musty odors and poor air quality out.💨

Additionally, professional routine assessments and improvements to ventilation systems contribute to a home that is both comfortable and free from unpleasant smells.

In other words, don't forget to schedule that bi-annual HVAC maintenance appointment to ensure your ventilation system is running properly😉

We hope this helped you get rid of all those stinky odors your sweet fur baby brings in, without having to get rid of said fur baby.... (Just kidding!)😆 And don't forget, even if you feel like you can't completely eliminate all the pet odors, that's okay!! Pet's are apart of your life, it's okay if they are impacting your home as such. The pro's of having a four legged companion, greatly outweigh the cons, am I right?😊
